Human Slave Trade: The Scandal of the 21st Century

Jodi Cobb, a world-renowned photographer for National Geographic Magazine, will be speaking on Tuesday, April 10th from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM in AMU Ballroom E, with a dessert reception to follow. Sponsored by the Helen Way-Klingler College of Arts and Sciences Student Council and MUSG, the topic of Ms. Cobb's speech will be Human Slave Trade: The Scandal of the 21st Century.

Ms. Cobb has worked in over 50 countries, primarily in the Middle East and Asia, and has written 24 articles for National Geographic about her experiences. She was one of the first photographers to enter China when it reopened to the West, resulting in her book Journey Into China, and has also written extensively on the geisha of Japan for her book Geisha: The Life, the Voices, the Art. Her speech will focus on how the demand for ever cheaper goods and services has made trafficking in humans the third largest criminal activity in the world, just behind weapons and drugs.

Darfur Action Coalition

If you would like to do something to stop genocide, you can attend the Darfur Action Coaltion meeting from 5-6:30pm on Wednesday December 6 in William Wehr 153.

At this meeting you will hear an update on recent events in Darfur and reports on Darfur activities in Wisconsin and throughout the U.S.

The purpose of the meeting is to plan activities and events for next semester. We need your energy, ideas and judgement.

If you can, bring your laptop so you can help the Darfur Action Coalition of Wisconsin copy email addresses from petitions into computer files to create email lists for future publicity.

Snacks will be provided.

Last spring the Darfur Action Coalition collected 4,500 signatures and moved our Representative in Congress, Gwen Moore, to undertake civil disobedience to stop genocide in Darfur. With your help, we can do even better next spring.

There is an upcoming event to commemorate the deaths of the four Churchwomen killed in El Salvador taking place this coming Sunday, December 3rd. It is called, “Justice from the Ground Up” and will feature a speaker from Guatemala, Teresa Samayoa. Sunday December 3rd, 2p.m. at St. Joseph Center. St. Joseph Center is located at the corner of 27th Street and Greenfield Avenue. Enter the parking lot from 29th Street. The event is free!

About the Speaker:
Teresa Samayoa is from a well to do family but at age 17 an encounter with a marginal area in her neighborhood opened her eyes and heart to the reality of her country. She began to volunteer with a Catholic Church in her home town in the area worst hit by the civil war. She served for 11 years in the social pastoral ministry in her diocese, accompanying the work and struggles of local community leaders.

Dr. Teresa Tobin and Dr. Michael Monahan, Marquette Philosophy Faculty members, will speak at Soup with Substance this Friday Nov. 10 in AMU 227 at 12:00pm. They will speak about philosophy of modern feminism and how it is practiced in the world today. The mission of Marquette and its correlation to feminist ideals will also be a part of their discussion.

When I graduated, I knew I wanted to work on some of society’s biggest problems, and the PIRGs gave me that chance. I work as a campaign coordinator for environmental issues for WISPIRG, working on campaigns that have ranged from protecting our national forests to lobbying the state to keep dangerous mercury pollution out of our waterways.

The state Public Interest Research Groups (the state PIRGs) are a nation-wide network of state-based public interest advocacy groups with offices all over the country. This year we're hiring more than 100 graduating college students to work on some of the biggest problems facing our country: to solve our energy problems, to protect our national forests, to reform the campaign finance system, to clean up our air, to make healthcare more affordable, and make an impact on many other public interest issues. Fair Trade Store Now Open / Music and Social Justice

A Fair Trade store is now open and operating in Milwaukee--the store is called Four Corners of the World and is located at 51st and North Ave. If any JUSTICE members are interested in volunteering time to work at the store, this will probably be a possibility in the near future.

Also, on Saturday, Nov. 11 there will be a conference titled "Music and Social Justice Ministers: Partners in the Reign of God." The event will be held at Holy Rosary Church (2011 N. Oakland) and will run from 9 AM-noon. The conference is a workshop about music and how it can relate to social justice and Catholic Social Teaching. University Ministry is willing to cover the cost of the conference.

Capoeira Fundraiser

The capoeira group that did the demo for us is having a fundraising event next Saturday. The event is called "Viva Brasil: A Night of Art and Culture to benefit Milwaukee's Youth". There will be drinks, hors d'oeuvres, cultural activities, gallery featuring local artists and capoeira show. It is only $5 for students. It will be from 6-10 Saturday October 14th at 3928 W. St. Paul Ave. It is easy to get to. Take the 1o bus to 38th and Wisconsin and it is a couple of blocks south and one block west. Bo and Sita Lozoff

The Lozoffs have been cited for numerous humanitarian awards, including the prestigious Temple Award for Creative Altruism from the Institute for Noetic Sciences. Their sincerity and commitment have earned the respect of hundreds of thousands of prisoners and others around the world who feel inspired to follow a similar path of living simply and joyfully caring about others.

In 1999, Bo received an honorary doctorate degree -- a Doctor of Laws -- from one of the oldest and most respected divinity schools in the nation, the Chicago Theological Seminary.
The Human Kindness Foundation, founded by Bo and Sita Lozoff, is a non-profit organization which stresses a way of life based upon three common principles taught by the great sages of all religions: Simple living, a dedication to service, and a commitment to personal spiritual practice.

Besides its internationally respected Prison-Ashram Project, begun in 1973, the Foundation sponsors and schedules Bo Lozoff's talks, workshops and concerts. Bo has led events in hundreds of prisons, hospitals, churches, universities and spiritual centers around the globe. Tuesday at 9pm in the International Center (AMU 407), the Milwaukee based capoeira group Maculele will be performing for JUSTICE. The demo will be interactive and include history about capoeira, which is a fight/dance that was developed by African slaves in Brazil. Oxfam's Adopt-a-Supermarket Campaign

If anyone is interested in pursuing Fair Trade issues in the Milwaukee community, a great opportunity exists with Oxfam's Adopt-a-Supermarket Campaign. The campaign is looking for people to "adopt" a local supermarket and, essentially, create a report card for the store regarding the availability of Fair Trade products. One would then use the report as leverage to increase the amount of Fair Trade products in the store. It's a pretty cool campaign, and can be accomplished in a few hours here or there. The Sudan Divestment Committe will be meeting on Thursday in the Student Lounge on the first floor of the Union (past the brew). If you have a laptop please bring it because we may be deviding up some research topics at the meeting. Also if you are interested in attending and have not received a copy of the Case Study on Divestment please leave a comment here and I'll email it to you as soon as I can. Student Leadership Summit
Taking place Oct. 7 from 9 AM- 2 PM. The summit is titled "Faith and Learning in Action," and includes service work (visits to cool Milwaukee agencies such as Growing Power and Repairers of the Breach), reflection, free lunch, and a lot of other cool things. Registration is FREE, and can be done online at www.marquette.edu/osd.

Miles For Meals
A run/walk on Oct. 6 to raise money for Midnight Run. It's only $15, includes a t-shirt, and the money goes to a great organization right here at Marquette. Registration is probably available somewhere, but I'm not sure--keep an eye out.

A walk through downtown Milwaukee on Oct. 8 to raise money for hunger issues. Stay tuned for more info...

National Declaration of Peace

This Saturday, Sept. 23, Peace Action Wisconsin is hosting a rally/march/and PeaceFest for National Declaration of Peace Day. The rally and march start around noon, with the PeaceFest running from 1:30-4 PM. All of this is being held at Pere Marquette Park--right down on good ol' Kilbourn. JUSTICE has been asked to do some tabling at this event, so I was thinking we should distribute materials about the teach-in. If anyone has an hour or two of their time on Saturday to help with this cause, it would be greatly appreciated. It should be pretty cool--if nothing else, there should be some hilarious, old-school peace-seekers. Power of Word
The slam poetry group "Power of Word" will be performing tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 14) @ 5 PM in the AMU Ballrooms. The performance is a part of the Meet and Greet Event, which runs from 4:30-6. Power of Word is a very powerful performance group--it should be cool.

Housing Trust Fund
If you have a few hours free Tuesday (the 19th) morning, go to City Hall room 301B to support the Milwaukee Housing Trust Fund as the Zoning and Neighborhood Development committee will be voting on whether or not to approve the recommedations made by the Housing Trust Fund Task Force. The meeting starts at 9 AM, but the issue will most likely not be reached until 10:30 AM. The Housing Trust Fund is a push to provide affordable housing in downtown Milwaukee for people who need it--this is a very important social justice issue at work in our own community.

Sexual Violence Awareness Week
Sunday @ 5PM there will be an overhead picture taken in the central mall for Sexual Violence Awareness Week. People are needed to participate in the picture. If you can't make it on Sunday, make sure to check out the events throughout the week.

Mexican Independence Festival
This Sunday in Mitchell Park--sounds pretty cool to me.

SOA Puppetistas
A group will be coming together soon to start making puppetistas (large, paper mache puppets used as street art) for the Ignatian Teach-In/School of the Americas trip in Nov. A Marquette professor with experience in street art will be assisting the group. Stay tuned for specifics...

The Urban Initiative
The Urban Initiative is a Marquette student group dedicated to establishing a grassroots street newspaper (The Milwaukee Street Beacon). The paper will focus on urban issues, and will encompass a variety of social justice issues (hunger and homelessness, etc.). The next group meeting is September 20 @ 5PM in Johnston Hall 313.
